Looking For The Perfect Summer Pillow

I’ve been on the hunt for pillows for some time. I love pillows. They MAKE A ROOM. Finding a great pillow, not as easy.

Tip: Find three different shapes/sizes of pillows with coordinating colors.

Tip: Oversized pillows look expensive so try for a 20×20 or 22×22

Tip: Matching your art to your pillow will make for a room that is put together

The Drape

I’m in the process of choosing drapery for two rooms, our guest room and master bedroom at our summer home in East Hampton.  Drapes can be daunting, and quite expensive. So I’m in a quest to find the best, risk free, and least expensive but not cheap looking drape.  The guide to drapery is to do the following:

  • Measure correctly. There are plenty of guides online to help you. Restoration Hardware has a helpful guide here.
  • Think about the colors in your room. Are you going for a light airy feel, or a dramatic impact?  You’ll see drapes primarily either light/neutral tones, or drapes with graphics. Before you jump at a graphic print, make sure you can live with the graphic you choose. They are expensive to replace.  If you are to take a risk with a pattern draped, keep the wall color simple, and tie in the drape pattern to your pillows and bedding.  For summer homes, I tend to gravitate towards linens and white. For NYC apartments, taupe and gray look fantastic.
  • Let light in? Or keep light out?  Drapes can be black out, or transparent. If you don’t mind a bit of light, you can go with a see through drape. If you do, go for the fully blacked out options.
  • Hardware is important. Go for hardware that looks expensive, and pulls in any other metals you have in the room.
  • Be confident. You’ve made your choice, and you’re sticking to it. There’s always the option to return if you don’t buy custom.  If you were window is a custom size, you can buy a size longer and have them hemmed at the cleaners.
